I bought this kettle about a month ago and have been quite pleased with it so far. It boils water quite fast! The goose neck paired with the upward handle is actually quite nice to pour with. I can even pour very slowly, a milliliter at a time! I had bought one from Target for about $45 that I ended up returning due to poor construction. It’s quite difficult to find a gooseneck kettle that’s over 0.7L and this one with a 1L or so capacity is perfect. Hamilton Beach has never failed me over the years come to think of it.

(The pictures were taken shortly after I’d used the kettle, so you see condensation in one "inside the kettle" shot.) This is the second goose-necked electric kettle that I’ve owned, and I like this one best. A full 1.2 liters of water came to a boil in 4 minutes 25 seconds for me. There is no minimum amount given, but 1.2 liters (that’s 5.1 cups) is the maximum. This maximum line is clearly marked. I usually boil only 2-3 cups. I pour the water over my loose-leaf tea, and the jar I’m pouring the boiling water into is cold. Immediately after pouring the boiling water into the jar, the water measures at 200F. (For the other brand’s kettle, it’s only 195F.) If I’m doing a green or white tea, I shut the kettle off manually about 3-3.5 minutes into the heating cycle.

The neck and lip is fashioned so that the water doesn’t arc much but rather pours down into the container, so it’s easy to aim. The lid is metal and is easy to pull off and put on. There are steam vents in the lid, but it doesn’t tend to steam much even at full boil. The inside of the kettle is completely stainless steel EXCEPT for a bit of plastic right up near the lid. Or maybe it’s black-coated metal; I can’t quite tell. It’s not in the water, but hot steam will get on it. The handle is thick enough that it’s easy to grasp and lift a full kettle when hot. There’s also a panel of plastic between your fingers and the hot metal to prevent burns. It’s easy to lift the kettle off and settle it on the power base, and the counter does not get hot under the power base. There is an auto-shut off when the water gets to a boil.

You only put water in the kettle, and you pour the water out into another container to brew your tea or coffee or whatever. You boil 2-3 kettles of water (and pour it out) before your first use. After that, when you’re done using the kettle, you pour out the extra water, rinse the inside (if you want to), and let it dry out.

This kettle was fine while it lasted, but it only lasted for 15 months. If I lived in Canada, it would have had a 5 year warranty. In the US, the warranty is good for 1 year. The on-off tab stopped working and there was no fix for it. Probably cheap plastic parts. Nothing to do except send it to a landfill. what a waste.

May 2021 – still going strong!!! May 2020 – this teapot is still going strong and I just love it!!! In 2018, when I bought this teapot I wrote: What a great little electric teapot. I love the look of it. Even though it seems small, it holds enough water for 2 1/2 mugs of hot water for tea. After looking at a million reviews of other teapots, I settled on this one (because of the ratings) and also because of the look. I am not disappointed. It works so well. The water boils quickly. and it’s fun to pour into my teacup with the long slim spout. I would recommend this to everyone! I wrote the above a couple of weeks after I got this teapot. 4 month later and it is still as great as when I first bought it. I just love it. I just updated my review because I think it’s nice to let people know when something lasts longer than just a couple of weeks

I’ve owned this for only 2 days, so cannot comment on long-term build quality. For that reason, I would not yet go to 5 stars. I paid full price for this unit and these are my candid impressions.

It’s a bit heavier than I anticipated, but still easily managed.

If you use the lid, be careful moving your hands near the small vent holes in the lid to avoid burning. The whole unit is a bit fussier about avoiding getting burned than other units I have used. It’s perfectly manageable, but just be careful as you are getting acquainted.

The "auto shutoff" feature does NOT work if the lid is NOT used. I normally do not use the lid if I’m standing nearby. By actual test, steam loss is very very low without the lid, so there’s no particular need to use it UNLESS you rely on the auto-shutoff feature.

I tested times and temperatures with the following results, using room temperature tap water:

At the "max" fill level (1.2 liters), max temp, full rolling boil, is reached in 4’30.

Using 16 ounces of water (my normal pour over coffee brew), max temp is reached in about 2’20. This is at least 2 minutes faster than using a standard pot on a small coiled stovetop burner. So it is quick.

Using 16 ounces of water, the temp is 195 at the 2 minute point, if that’s where you want to stop.

If water is at max temp with a full rolling boil, it will still be at about 195 two minutes later if left standing after removal from the base heating unit. If left standing for only 1 minute, the temp is about 205.

So, if you want to pour at a certain temp short of a full rolling boil, you can hit that temp on the way up, or just let it go to a full boil and then let the water cool back down to your desired temp before pouring. I haven’t found that water temp is critical for pour over coffee, but your experience may differ.

Even if you try to shake out the last bit of water, there will be a few teardrops worth left behind. The rim prevents total drainage if upside down. I don’t know if this will lead to rust issues over time. I have average size male hands and can get only 4 fingers inside and could not get this totally dry by hand, so you will likely have to live with leaving some moisture inside and see what happens.

Long term, I’m not yet sure if I will use the lid and go to a full boii so I can take advantage of auto-shutoff or not, since I’m always standing right next to the unit anyway. In fact, I may just use a timer and pull the pot off the heating unit at the 2 minute point when the water is going through 195 on the way up, never hitting a full boil.

So far, so good; no major surprises.

I have used this kettle every morning for 8 months making pour-over coffee – no problems whatsoever. It still works great, heats water to boiling very quickly, no complaints at all. The spout provides a very precise pour – it’s surprising how much control over the water flow I have with this kettle. I can direct a stream of water with enough accuracy to not only wash down the sides of my pour-over, but also to draw simple shapes barista-style in the crema. This is a great little unit!

    7. Esio Trot

This kettle is fantastic. I love how fast it boils and the precision spout is both easy and satisfying to use. I am NOT in the habit of regularly emptying and drying the kettle after use and have not had any of the rusting issues other reviewers have mentioned.
I do wish however that it were slightly bigger – 1.3 L maybe. To fill the chemex as I would like, I actually over-fill the kettle, which works fine, but I’m also the kind of person who doesn’t clean the kettle 😉

This kettle has lots of pros and we love it, but, there are a few cons for us that may not bother others. The pros are very quick heating of water, very easy to use and comfortable to pick up and pour water out. The cons are, there is a curled space around the inside top of the kettle that holds water when you try to empty it, so, I take a clean towel to try to wipe it all out. A small con. We are coffee drinkers and like all the other kettles I’ve seen the amount of water is way too small. I have to fill it up constantly, especially, when we have company. I would love to see a 2 Quart electric kettle on the market, and Hamilton Beach is innovative enough to begin that. I know many people would buy it. Recap is this is a nice kettle and we are content with it. We would have been thrilled with a 2 quart.

A huge improvement over heating water on a gas range. This Hamilton Beach kettle does its job, heating water quickly, turning itself off when boiling. Its simple shape may not be appealing to those who seek something sleek. But it is reliable and does not leak. Important to me is that, for pour-over coffee, balance and weight are ideal for accurate and easy pouring from the spout. I am able to add just the right amount of water and not too much. At its price, an excellent value.

Well made, attractive, reliable, perfect size, long-lasting. I love this kettle so much I bought a second when the first one died after many years of daily use. We have another Hamilton Beach 1.7L kettle which my husband uses, but that one is too big for me. I prefer this 1.2L kettle with the gooseneck spout. Highly recommended!
