My biggest concern was whether the underside of my breaded food would crisp without turning. I have 5 air fryers, not all dedicated stsnd alone, and only the original ninja grill/air fryer and a Phillips, that I gave away, were able to do this.
This 8 qt Chefman did indeed crisp the underside of my breaded cutlets without turning, just have to spray both sides.
Don’t be dismayed by the low 1300 watts as this unit uses halogen bulb as heat source. This turns on and off as it regulates temperature and gets very hot. It also serves as the.internal light source as there is no dedicated light.
It is very bright with amazingly clear visibility of the cooking food.

The two memory settings as well as the default air fry setting are all 400° and 15 minutes. My ninja which was my goto air fryer is 390° and 20 minutes. Yet the Chefman produced.much crisper cutlet and crispy smashed potatoes than the ninja on its trial run.
I’ll probably lower memory settings to 390° as the cutlet came out super crispy and some potato pieces were all crisp with little internal fluff. I’ll need to make bigger pieces next time.
      Haven’t used the probe yet.
Nice to have the 2 minute extra and the 450° for 2 minute controls but haven’t used them either.
Front panel controls are super intuitive to use.
Temperature can be controlled in 5° increments
I’m used to using tongs to remove good from ninja so not big deal here for me but the crisper plate is not super tight and might fall out if you turn basket upside down. Nice 10″ x 10: cooking area is just slightly larger the majority of air fryers but the square shape does allow for plenty of single layer food.
Unit comes well packaged, nothing broken or bent.
Small footprint for an 8 qt, just taller than some others.
Will update once I do more cooks and regulate Temperature settings as this Chefman cooks hotter and faster than all my other air fryers.
Biggest shortcoming is not having on/off switch so have to unplug or panel stays lighted and time/temp contues to alternate.

I am single, a senior and disabled. Preparing my food is difficult so anything I can do to make meals easier, I’m all for it! I bought the 8 qt because I never wanted to have to make food in batches. I use my Chefman at least 4 times a week. My kitchen is littered with all sorts of kitchen appliances which have been used on occasion. The Chefman makes all sorts of food that I had foregone for a long time because I did not want to heat up the big oven for one serving.

The Chefman is fast and very easy to clean (Try using Dawn Powerwash.) I tried using the probe once and didn’t get the results I wanted. It is going to take some experimentation to dial in the perfect results. I don’t use the preset icons – I like setting the exact time and temp. Many frozen foods don’t have air fryer instructions so you have to wing it. I’ve seen it suggested (and tried) using 80% time of a regular oven. Over time, you learn what the right time and temp works best.

Some people suggest you spray oil on foods meant to be crispy – to make it even crispier. I find this makes food soggy. But the beauty of an airfryer is trying old and new foods at different times and temps (don’t go too crazy) One thing that doesn’t get mentioned too often is reheating pizza. Best way to prepare slices. In fact, single serve frozen pizzas bake perfectly.

I bought a package of parchment liners from Amazon. They work fine (make sure you put food in all four corners). Since the Chefman is so easy to clean, the liners are not really needed – they just make my life a little easier.

Of all the appliances I have bought over the years, the Chefman is the most practical, the most fun and the most economical appliance I have bought for my kitchen.

If you’re looking for an air fryer that really makes it easy look no further! Ive had this for close to a year now and can confidently say it is well worth the money. This air fryer is very well built and the speed that it heats up at is amazing, I’ll recommend this to anyone who’ll listen!

I don’t think it gets as hot as they claim it does. The heating light is very bright so don’t look at it. Yum French Fries

This is my second air fryer. Previously I had an air fryer with 2 smaller baskets. It absolutely cooked like a dream but it didn’t meet our needs. I needed something with one large basket. I took a chance on this unit.
Pros: 1) the window!! Wasn’t sure about whether it would be useful when I bought it, but it Definitely is helpful in cooking to perfection. Now, I wouldn’t want one without it. 2) the large size basket. Great size. I can cook 2 packages of hotdogs at once. 3) the halfway beeper. When you set a cook time, it will beep halfway through so you can turn the food over. 4) simplicity. It’s not overly complicated.
Cons: 1) I found the probe useless. It’s awkward closing the door on it. I never use it. I use my wireless probe.
      2) doesn’t get quite the char on the meat like my previous unit but still good. 3) I thought the temp went up to 450, but I haven’t found it. 400 is the high temp.
Overall I would give this unit 8.5 out of 10.

From what you read, you’d think that anything you put into an Air Fryer will cook perfectly and taste delicious every time. They are however just convection ovens that simplify things and clean up quickly. Air fried foods can be tasty but there still can be trial and error with any recipe. Every cooking chart of Air Fryer times/temperatures I have seen has noticeably different numbers for the same foods. Peoples’ cooking preferences are different, preheating can be relevant, and smaller fryers tend to cook faster. Spraying most vegetables using an olive oil or avocado oil spray bottle is absolutely necessary before cooking for a tasty exterior so definitely get one. I like the spray bottles made of glass.

This Air Fryer is very well-designed and has features that many others don’t. Small footprint for a 5-quart Air Fryer, a window, fairly basic control panel, temperature probe, good underside airflow for items that don’t happen to get flipped, 2-minute (claimed) boost for extra crisping, all black color, display turns off after 20 min of inactivity except for one dim button, pre-heating probably not as important due to having a halogen bulb instead of a regular element, draws only 950 watts, and square shape of basket maximizes surface area better than a round basket to place more items. Biggest concern is that the halogen bulb may not last nearly as long as the regular type of element that most air fryers use.

It’s common to choose Air Fryer size based on “one quart per person”. This five quart air fryer’s unique features influenced my buying decision over the Instant Vortex Plus 4 qt which is simple and known to cook consistently inside and out, along with also having a dehydrate function. I would have bought the Vortex if I didn’t feel capable of working with the Chefman as a “gadget”. I don’t know if the plastic or non-stick surfaces have toxic particles because this is not written anywhere. I bought 7.8″ square paper liners (which are a little large but work well) to separate food from the Teflon and also for easier cleanup. Any liners close to this size will work about the same for this 5 qt Chefman. I usually trim around the edges 3/4″ or so to make them slightly smaller. I also occasionally use a hole punch (designed for notebook paper) to punch holes in the liners in a similar pattern as the holes on the sample flat liners that came with the machine. This can improve both underside airflow and overall browning/crispness for some foods. I very slightly enlarged the hole that the probe wire fits through so it won’t crush the wire long term but I don’t recommend doing this unless you are very good with tools.

It is rare to see an Air Fryer that uses a halogen bulb instead of a regular heating element except in larger air fryers with glass bowls. The bulb is much shorter than a regular coiled element so it uses about 30% less wattage and gets hot quickly. It cycles on about every 40 seconds and off 12 seconds at 400F costing about 25 cents per hour of use. The air flow seems to very evenly surround the food including the underside and the fan is powerful. If the halogen bulb lasts several years with minimal use, I definitely will have made the right decision over buying the Instant Vortex Plus. If the bulb ever went out, removing – replacing – and re-wiring would be a task. I haven’t been able to find a replacement 1000W bulb however so I don’t know if this would even be possible.

As a gadget person I decided to take a chance on the bulb life and cooking ability. With minimal use for 6 weeks so far I am very pleased. It’s quality built with an all around well thought out design, looks good, and there’s no sign of anything peeling off. I have not however seen any dramatic crisping effect so far using the 2-minute boost to 450F button for the particular items I have cooked. Simply adding more time may do the same thing. I was skeptical about the probe but simply hitting the Fish button and placing the probe correctly, produced perfectly cooked Salmon. Absolutely amazing; very pleased.

Regrettably, I must report that when set for 400F, the actual temperature inside the unit I received never went above 350F.

I noticed immediately that meat cooked for 8-minutes at 400F was coming out under-cooked compared to my prior air fryer, so I bought a new in-oven thermometer to test the unit – and sure enough, the CHEFMAN 5-Quart Digital Air Fryer never heated above 350F, even when left running for 15 minutes set at 400F. I returned the device immediately.

By the way: The unit boasts of a super-heating feature that claims to push the internal temperature to 425F for a short time at the end of cooking. This feature does indeed drive up the temperature — but it will maintain this heat for only two minutes, at which time it is pre-programmed to automatically shut off the device altogether. The duration of the super-heating cannot be extended.

It is a gorgeous unit and may serve well for lower-temperature cooking, but if you really need a full-fledged 400F temperature that will continue for many minutes, I found and proved that the CHEFMAN 5-Quart Digital Air Fryer I received does not meet that requirement.

We are a family of six and we use our air fryer almost on a daily basis. So to be fair, it gets moderate to heavy use. We never use anything we aren’t supposed to on the nonstick surface inside the basket. That being said we’ve had it for just under 4 months at the time of this. Writing and a large flakes of nonstick teflon have come off both the false bottom and the basket itself. That isn’t an easy fix, plus I don’t want that in my food. As far as the functionality of the air fryer, it’s great, The teflon coming off is the only issue we’ve had with it.

Millions of these have already been sold and many millions more are forecast to be sold through 2030. Eventually there will be one in every kitchen. Much like a microwave.
This will take a little getting used to. Lots of foods include cooking instructions for conventional oven or microwave, but the food industry hasn’t caught up with air fryers en masse just yet. Some day.
This air fryer does best when you put only moderate amounts of food in the basket. If you load the basket to full, you’re going to be disappointed. Included instructions often say shake the basket 1/2 way through the cooking cycle. A reminder may even pop up on your air fryer screen. If your basket is more than 1/2 full, even if shaken, the result won’t be the best.
This is not only a nice kitchen addition but also fun to use. You are warned, however, do not look into the light. Not to worry. It’s not that bad. So what if your children’s faces all look like they’ve been in the Bahamas for a month.

I find it difficult to estimate the size of stuff via a picture on-line. I originally bought the larger oven because of its full-range capabilities, but it was HUGE for just me. This smaller version is just a large bucket, with no dehydration. It works well, but will take a while to figure out how to use it. I do love the window. The light seems to have a mind of its own.
